Why Visit the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry – Rosemary Dunes Trailhead

Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Path is a 19.6-kilometer lightly trafficked loop trail with a suitable lake for all ability levels. Located at Orange Beach, Alabama, the route is open year-round and offers a variety of activities. This Trail is also suitable for dogs.

Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail is named after Hugh Branyon, who served as Superintendent of Gulf State Park from the 1970s until his retirement in 2009. The Alabama Coastal Birding Trail and the Coastal Connection are both parts of the Trail, recently nominated as a National Recreation Trail in 2010.   

Rosemary Dunes Trail is one of six trails that go through Gulf State Park in southern Alabama as part of the Hugh Branyon Backcountry Trails network. The walk begins on Beach Road, located just steps from a white-sand beach and the Gulf of Mexico. It then heads east, passing through magnificent natural environments shaded by large pine trees. The Trail is free to use and only open during daylight hours. The Rosemary Dunes Trail is accessible through AL 59 South (also known as Gulf Shores Parkway) and AL 182 East Beach Blvd. Turn left into the Rosemary Dunes Trailhead parking lot after traveling 3.5 miles east on AL 182. While on the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail network, they must keep all pets on a leash.
